Manic Depression

What is manic depression?  Is it the same thing as bipolar disorder or is it a completely different animal? Actually, manic depression is simply an older term for bipolar disorder.  The term bipolar disorder has become more socailly acceptable over the past 20 years or so, so that is what you will hear most people say when referring to this illness.

But what is it, exactly?

Manic depression, or bipolar disorder is a neurological problem which is caused by the misfiring of neurotransmitters in the brain.  This causes someone to either have too much or too little of the proper chemicals that as normal person has circulating throughout their body.

What does this mean?

This means that someone who has manic depression will have a very low mood, or be depressed for several days or weeks due to a lack to the proper chemicals in their body.  This will affect their relationships and possibly their employment.  They might not think anything is very important anymore, including bathing or going to work.

The flip side of this is that when they have too much of the missing chemical in their body, they have an overabundance of energy and a heightened sex drive.  They are much more likely to take big risks than a person with normal amounts of these chemicals and they are much more likely to get themselves into trouble through compulsive behaviors like shopping, gambling or sex.

Manic depression can be treated with medication.  Those who suspect they or someone they know are manic depressive, should see a doctor immediately to find out if their suspicions are correct.  An experienced physician will be able to prescribe medications that will lessen the symptoms of manic depression and help you to get back to your normal, healthy, happy, well-balanced life.
