Lamictal for Bipolar Disorder

When you are first diagnosed with bipolar disorder, it sometimes takes several months to find the medication or combination of medications that work for you.  There are a lot of patients out there who are looking for the best bipolar disorder medications possible.  There is a lot of buzz lately about the medication Lamictal, so I thought that I would give you a little information on it.

Lamictal does not claim to take away you depression or mania. Instead it promises to increase the time between your mood swings or cycles so that you will not experience them as often as you normally would.  It seems to be particularly effective in delaying depression.

The Lamictal website suggests that you only use it for 18 months and then you should get reevalutated.   There are a couple of warnings though:

• You might experience a skin rash with this medication.
• You shouldn’t take it with Depakote.
• You should not take a higher dose that is prescribed.
• Make SURE that your physician writes out your prescription clearly.  There have been many reports of patients receiving the wrong medication due to doctor and pharmacist error.

If your doctor prescribes Lamictal, you will probably be given a smaller dose and then have the dose increased over time, just as with any other bipolar medication.  It may take some time to get your dosage right, so try to be patient.  If you have bipolar disorder, you know how hard it can be to find the right treatment, so be sure to record your moods and tell your doctor everything that you are experiencing so that he or she can get a better understanding of your situation and get you the right treatments for bipolar disorder.
