Bipolar Mania and Sex

Anyone with bipolar disorder will tell you that it’s not the depression that will kill you, it’s the mania.  When you’re depressed, you don’t feel like doing anything at all, but when you’re suffering from bipolar mania, your life can get crazier than you ever thought.

There are many symptoms of bipolar mania including euphoric feelings, lots of energy and feeling like you are super powerful.  However, one of the main ways that mania presents itself in bipolar patients is through sexual desire.

During manic phases, sexual drive can heighten to the point that individuals will do things that they never in a million years thought they would do.  I have talked to many bipolar patients who have cheated on their mates while manic, simply because they wanted the sex.  They have also had types of sex that they would not normally have such as sex in a group, sex outdoors or in front of people, or types of fetish sex.

When you are suffering from bipolar mania, you aren’t really thinking long term so you probably aren’t worried about protection during sex or the consequences that might result of your sexual escapades.  That’s why it’s very important to see a doctor if you think you might have bipolar disorder.  Medication can help decrease your episodes of mania and depression and help you to begin to think clearly.

Even though a manic phase might seem fun for a while, you will end up paying the consequences eventually.  Whether with an STD, a divorce or even rape or jail time.  Stay on your meds and you won’t have to worry manic episodes getting you into trouble.
