Bipolar Disorder: Lithium and other Treatments

Those with bipolar disorder are fortunate to be able to choose between many drugs and treatments.  One of the very first and still popular treatments for bipolar disorder is Lithium.  It reduces suicide risk, helps prevent mania and is usually prescribed for long periods of time.

When being treated for bipolar disorder, lithium is not perfect by any means.  As with any drug, there are side effects.  Common side effects of lithium are:

• Hand tremor (If tremors are particularly bothersome, an additional medication can help.)
• Increased thirst
• Increased urination
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Weight gain
• Impaired memory
• Poor concentration
• Drowsiness
• Muscle weakness
• Hair loss
• Acne
• Decreased thyroid function (which can be treated with thyroid hormone)

Lithium does not begin working immediately.  It usually takes a couple of weeks for it to kick in and begin to work.  Since Lithium can affect kidney function, most doctors like to do a simple blood test every few months to check to make sure that the Lithium is not negatively affecting the kidneys.

There are also a few serious risks to consider when treating bipolar disorder. Lithium can cause weakend bones in children and is not recommended for pregnant women.
