Bipolar Disorder Books

If you have bipolar disorder, books about others with the same problems will often make you feel as though you are not alone.  There are a lot of books on the market both about bipolar disorder or by people with bipolar disorder that can help you through the tough times.  Here are a few of those bipolar disorder books:

Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder -

Written by an author who has bipolar disorder (and who lived with a partner who also has bipolar disorder) and a coauthor with over ten books on the topic of mental illness, the book offers specific, practical and realistic tips on how a couple can work together as a team to create a treatment plan that teaches them to live with the illness while still maintaining a loving and joyful relationship. (Though this book is written for couples, friends and family members can use the techniques in the book as well.)

Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament-

The march of science in explaining human nature continues. In Touched With Fire, Jamison marshals a tremendous amount of evidence for the proposition that most artistic geniuses were (and are) manic depressives. This is a book of interest to scientists, psychologists, and artists struggling with the age-old question of whether psychological suffering is an essential component of artistic creativity. Anyone reading this book closely will be forced to conclude that it is. Very Highly Recommended.

Madness: A Bipolar Life-

Hornbacher, who detailed her struggle with bulimia and anorexia in Wasted, now shares the story of her lifelong battle with mental illness, finally diagnosed as rapid cycling type 1 bipolar disorder. Even as a toddler, Hornbacher couldn’t sleep at night and jabbered endlessly, trying to talk her parents into going outside to play in the dark. Other schoolchildren called her crazy. When she was just 10, she discovered alcohol was a good mood stabilizer; by age 14, she was trading sex for pills. In her late teens, her eating disorder landed her in the hospital, followed by another body obsession, cutting.

All of these books are ones that I would recommend reading if you have bipolar disorder. Reading is a great activity that you can do when you’re depressed that is productive and has a positive effect on you and your illness.
