Accepting Your Bipolar Diagnosis

Many people go through their entire lives never telling anyone that they have a bipolar diagnosis. Since bipolar disorder is still stigmatized, there are a lot of people suffering in fear and silence.
Even those with excellent communication skills can be hesitant to let others know of their diagnosis. Fear of what someone else may think often keeps us avoiding the subject completely. It’s often just easier to say that you are taking medication for depression than to tell someone that you have bipolar disorder.
Sometimes it’s not just fear that has a bipolar patient in hiding, it is denial. However, in order to begin healing, we must accept our diagnosis and begin to move on. You have to remember that your suffering can stop. There IS treatment for bipolar disorder.
Accepting your illness does not mean that you accept the fact that you are crazy or use your illness as an excuse. Your illness does not define who you are. It does not make you a good or bad person. It is merely a part of you.
If you have diabetes, you likely do not go about your whole life letting it affect your relationships and your career. You are not bipolar. You HAVE a bipolar disorder diagnosis. It’s only a piece of who you are – not the whole definition.
If you have been recently diagnosed, do not expect acceptance to happen overnight. It may take some time. Once you accept your diagnosis, you can begin the process of finding the right meds and learn the best way to deal with the illness.
Do the best you can and keep on going. Put one foot in front of the other and keep telling yourself that you will not use your illness as an excuse. You are a good person. Your bipolar diagnosis didn’t change that.
