Bipolar Disorder and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is often the happiest time of a woman’s life.  But when women have bipolar disorder, sometimes this happiness turns to intense fear. Fear for themselves and fear for thier child.

It is absolutely necessary for a woman with bipolar to have some kind of help from a phychiatrist during her pregnancy.  Symptoms can be managed and things can be ok, but care should be taken and steps should be made to insure  the safety of both mother and child.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

brain Most people, at some time or another, experience a bout of depression.  This is perfectly normal.  Sometimes situations get us down,  life gets hard and we feel sad.  Life is filled with every day ups and downs, but for some people there is never any in between….never any peace.

People with Bipolar Disorder (also called manic depression), experience extreme feelings with no relief in sight.

  • These ups and downs can be too much for a person to cope with.
  • They can interfere with daily life.
  • Sometimes they can even be dangerous.
